Earlier this month during the Grammy awards, Beck won Album of the Year for “Morning Phase” beating out Sam Smith and Beyonce. As you may have heard, perennial jackass, Kanye West interrupted the show petitioning that Beyonce should have won the award. While that is a debate for a different venue and time, I was wondering how this surprising outcome and controversy would affect search results for the top two contenders and the narcissistic rapper. Unfortunately, once again, the squeaky wheel got the grease.
Although both Beyonce and Beck saw tremendous growth in search volume the day of the Grammys, it was nothing compared to what Kanye received. I was actually surprised to see that Beck’s share of search volume surpassed Beyonce the day of the event days following and gives me some hope for our future.
A few other takeaways from this data:
- People in Wyoming and North Dakota couldn’t care less about Beck, Beyonce or the Grammys
- People in the southeast were most likely to search for Beyonce
- People in the northeast were most likely to search for Beck
