Self promotion has a bad reputation, but why? I used to think it was a bad thing too until I realized I could help a lot more people by letting them know what I do and which areas I have expertise in. In fact, if you’re great at what you do, you owe it to the world to promote yourself. We need to know where to turn when we need your expertise.
I think self promotion in the workplace in particular is viewed negatively. It brings up visions of narcissists and braggarts but those are both two extreme examples. Self promotion at work can just be highlighting your contributions to the team. You should be proud of the good work you have done. I think that we tend to believe that we live in a meritocracy where a job well done will be noticed and appreciated but remember that the people you hope will notice (managers and superiors) are also worried about their own lives and careers and are not just focused on what you are doing. There should never be a review of your job performance where they are missing critical accomplishments. That is on you to provide.
We don’t blame brands for promoting their products and services. If you show me a brand that doesn’t promote itself, I’ll show you a dead brand. I hope you have the courage to stand up and let the world know who you are and how you can help. Please don’t make us have to seek you out.
